Based very closely on the popular BMW X6 Concept, BMW first launched the X6 coupe-crossover for the 2009 model year, calling it a Sport Activity Coupe. Compared with the concept, very little has changed. Even the X6's complex front fender design made it to production.

The range-topping BMW X6 xDrive50i is propelled by an all-new twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 unit producing 400 horsepower at 5500 rpm and 446 pound-feet of torque between 1750 rpm and 4500 rpm. The engine is designed as a replacement to the company's current 4.8-liter naturally-aspirated V8. The X6's other engine is also a twin-turbo setup.

The BMW X6 isn’t for everyone, however, if you want a sport utility vehicle with the emphasis strongly on the sport, then the BMW X6 may be what you want, assuming you have deep pockets.

We all know that BMW is in the habit of naming its sport utility vehicles “Sport Activity Vehicles.” First, our tester was the M version, which in BMW-speak identifies the vehicle as BMW’s sportiest. While the base BMW X6 sports a 300 horsepower 3.0-liter, our tester had a 4.4-liter twin turbocharged V8 that pumped out an impressive 555 hp through an overly adjective 6-speed automatic transmission. Oh, they did an excellent job of stopping the car, but they squeaked. That sloping rear window covers a good-sized trunk that does expend with the rear seat backs folded. Each seat has thigh extensions for increased ride comfort on longer trips. The rear seats are also heated. The rear seats also have their own entry and reading lamps.

You can also use the HUD to set the speed at the speed limit, then unset it, while the digital speedometer shows actual speed, so you can make a comparison.

Most recently, however, BMW added new accessories from BMW performance so M series enthusiasts can get some of the 2011 BMW X6 M series options without the M series price.

Not much has changed with the look of the 2011 BMW X6 this year, however, buyers can customize their new BMW X6 thanks to BMW Performance Accessories now available though BMW’s dealer network BMW Performance offers an aerodynamics kit to completely change the look for starters. Other aerodynamic options include a rear spoiler, matte black rear fins and a black front grill.

The 2011 BMW X6 is available with two different power kits, depending on which engine it’s equipped with. The 2011 version of the BMW X6 xDrive35i model has a total output of 326 horsepower and 332 pound-feet. Even with all of these modifications and improvements to the performance, BMW claims to have managed improving fuel economy in the 2011 model by about seven percent.
