2012 Chevrolet Sonic will now be listed as the most fuel-efficient small cars in the market with its new fuel economy readings. The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic draws its power from the 1.4-liter Ecotec turbocharged engine that churns out 138 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. In city driving, the Chevy Sonic returns 29 mpg city.
The Chevy Sonic’s 1.8L manual on the other hand gets fuel economy of 26 mpg city and 35 mpg highway while the automatic gets 25 mpg city and 35 mpg highway.
The magic number automakers seem to be striving to hit is 40 mpg highway. It faces strong competition from cars like the Ford Fiesta and Hyundai Elantra, both of which offer 40 mpg on the highway. But with the 1.4 liter turbo engine backed by a six-speed manual transmission, the Chevy Sonic will get a very respectable 29 city/40 mpg highway, for a combined mileage of 33 mpg. In the case of the Chevy Sonic, the 1.4 liter turbo engine pumps out a healthy 148 horsepower and 138 ft-lbs of torque, whereas the non-turbo produces 138 horsepower and a wimpy 123 ft-lbs of torque.
Not everyone that likes sporty performance cars wants a big V8. The Ecotec turbo engine has 138 HP, giving it 18 HP more than the Ford Fiesta. The engine uses a low-mass hollow-frame cast iron block, dual overhead cams with continuously variable valve timing, chain driven cams, roller finger camshaft followers, and piston cooling oil jets. The engine also has an integrated oil cooler, variable flow oil pump, and an electronic thermostat. I wonder if that integrated turbo and exhaust manifold will mean enthusiasts can do turbo swaps on the car.
