The small Audi Q3 is based on the same platform as the Volkswagen Tiguan. The Audi Q3 measures 173 inches long and 72 inches wide, while the larger Audi Q5 is based on the Audi A4 sedan platform. Audi's little Q3 shares all of its design with other Audi products, from the grille to the new swooped beltline to the forward-leaning coupe roofline and very prominent high tail lamps. The Audi 2.0-liter turbocharged direct injection 4-valve engine, producing 211 horsepower, will be mated to ether a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. Front-wheel drive will be standard, with Audi's quattro all-wheel drive as an option. An Audi Drive Select system offers four different driving modes from sport to economy.

The second seat folds down flat in a 2/3-1/3 split scheme, with 16 cubic feet of space behind the second row and 48 cubic feet with the seats folded. The option list includes LED ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof, sport seats, adaptive headlamps, adaptive shocks, hard-drive navigation, wheels and tires up to 19-inch, and a wide variety of electronic safety systems, including park assist, side assist, active lane assist and camera-based speed-limit display.

The 2.0L petrol engine delivers both 170hp and 211hp. The more powerful version can hit 62.14 mph in 6.9 seconds, reaching a top speed of 142.92 mph. The 2.0L Diesel offered at launch delivers 177 hp, and the later version will have 140hp. Both petrol engines and the more powerful diesel will come with quattro permanent all-wheel drive. The less powerful 2.0L Diesel (177hp) will be front-wheel drive only.

The Audi Q3 includes an electronic stabilization program (ESP) which offers trailer stabilization, side assist to help drivers when changing lanes and lane assist which helps drivers remain on the same lane by slightly correcting steering.

Audi got into the crossover business late, and it’s been scrambling to catch up. Audi’s top brass apparently believes the 2012 Audi Q3 side is too small for America. The 2012 Audi Q3 features McPherson struts in front and a multilink suspension setup in the rear that gives the compact crossover a respectable 6.7 inches of ground clearance. A front-wheel-drive 2012 Audi Q3 side will be offered in Europe, but most are expected to feature Quattro four-wheel drive.

A hydraulic multiplate clutch distributes the power to the front and rear wheels as needed and works in conjunction with the ESP system and an electronic differential lock to break individual wheels if they lose traction. Audi worked hard on reducing weight. As a result, Audi’s version is said to be more than 130 pounds lighter than its VW sister model.

The 2012 Audi Q3 will launch with four different engine options, all of which are transversely mounted and boast 2.0 liters, turbo charging, direct injection and stop-start technology. The TFSI gasoline engines boast 168 and 200 horsepower, respectively, while the TDI turbodiesel offer up 138 and 175 hp.

The diesel gives away 25 hp but counters with an extra 59 pound-feet of torque that’s available from just 1,750 rpm. At highway speeds, all’s well. The aforementioned engine quietness, plus a relative absence of tire noise thanks to comparatively tall sidewalls, makes this seem like a quieter cruiser than Audi’s sport sedans and hatchbacks.
