2011 Ford Mustang GT. Not that this revamped Mustang is helpless or hopeless on those twisty roads. Nineteen’s are standard on Brembo-package cars and the California Specials. Interior quality is up, measurably so in these pre-production cars compared to the Ford Mustang GT 4.6 I drove last year.
The good: The 5-liter V-8 pumps out big power and makes a delightful sound while the suspension keeps the 2011 Ford Mustang GT well-grounded.

The bottom line: An excellent modern take on a muscle car, the 2011 Ford Mustang GT can be equipped with an excellent set of cabin tech. Poor fuel economy encourages, which takes all the fun out of this car.

A wide pipe leads out the front to a cold air induction filter, stock on the Ford Mustang GT. Even half throttle will make the car leap. The big power from the engine makes wide power bands with the gears. Ford managed to score 17 mpg city and 26 mpg in EPA fuel economy testing, but don't think those are real-world numbers. Mitten fuel economy will be more commonly achieved. CNET's car, driven through city streets, on freeways, and over mountain roads, only averaged 15.4 mpg.

The Ford Mustang GT exhibits classic muscle car handling. It may not be precision handling, but it is fun to steer the car with torque, and the Ford Mustang GT has plenty to spare. A limited slip differential is standard on the Ford Mustang GT, and Ford even lets you specify the rear axle drive ratio. The suspension also does an excellent job of keeping the car flat. The Ford Mustang GT has a heavy feel, and the load shifts substantially when entering a corner, but body sway is minimal. And Ford did an excellent job of tuning this suspension for everyday driving.

The 2011 Ford Mustang ranks 1. This ranking is based on our analysis of 9 published reviews and test drives of the Ford Mustang, and our analysis of reliability and safety data. For 2011, the Ford Mustang gets a power increase of 95 ponies and 40 pound-feet of torque. While most critics agree that the 2011 Ford Mustang is the best muscle car overall, the 2011 Chevrolet Camaro is still definitely worth a look. In addition to its eye-catching retro styling, the Camaro features a 312-horsepower V6 engine and six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

The 2011 Ford Mustang V6 is available in two trims, base and Premium; and two body styles, coupe and convertible. For more power, check out the 412-horsepower Mustang GT and 550-horsepower Mustang Shelby GT500.
