The Scion xD succeeds in delivering those parts of the equation. It's a small hatchback, but there's something a little taller and tougher about its design. From the outside, the 2010 Scion xD can seem slightly menacing. The standard 16-inch wheels sit inside flared wheel arches, with alloys ranging up to 18 inches offered as options.

While the 2011 Scion xD is Scion's youth-oriented model, with definite tuner and aftermarket cues, it's surprisingly not very exciting to drive. Electronic stability control isn't yet standard on all 2011 Scion xD models, and its performance in crash tests has been good, but not top-notch. Many dealer add-ons for the 2011 Scion xD are cosmetic enhancements, but they also offer a wide range of TRD performance accessories—including items like quick-shifter kits, larger brakes, shorter springs, or a performance exhaust system.

Oddly, considering the xD's extensive features list, it doesn't include a Bluetooth hands-free interface, and there's no factory Bluetooth option; it's only available as an add-on.
Toyota’s entry-level brand is under fire. After seven years of relatively easy pickings, a combination of poor corporate decision making and increasingly laser-accurate competition, Scion is scrambling.

Perhaps the vehicle most under fire is the entry-level Scion xD, a poor cousin replacement to the poor cousin xA hatchback that although mechanically identical, couldn’t hold a candle to the original square-box xB in terms of perception.

The Scion xD is not an overt performer, especially with its 16-inch all-season tires on steel wheels, and relatively modest brakes (including rear drums).Maybe Scion’s trying to attract all those old Honda Civic owners bouncing around on cut springs?

While a starting price of $14,900 is middle of the pack, it’s certainly not a stripper model... there’s standard power windows and locks, air conditioning, a good Pioneer stereo, expensive side mirrors with integrated LED turn signals, split-folding and reclining rear seats, and a full load of safety systems like ABS, traction and stability control, six airbags, and active front headrests. Everything from a rear spoiler and carbon-fiber B-pillar appliqués, to TRD-branded brake pads, shift-knobs, sway bars and exhausts can be had. There are too many smart, sharp, satisfying vehicles now on sale in the xD’s backyard to recommend it without serious consideration. Unlike the xB – or even the sexy 2011 tC coupe – the Scion xD is not the emotional choice in the Scion showroom.

The Scion xD features front bucket seats and 60/40 fold flat rear seats for a level cargo space. The Scion xD comes mono spec like all Scion vehicles. The Scion xD comes with many standard features including power steering, windows, door locks and mirrors; remote keyless entry; air conditioning; four-wheel anti-lock brakes (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA); driver and front passenger dual stage airbags; front seat-mounted side airbags; front and rear side curtain airbags; first-aid kit; a tire pressure monitor system and tilt steering wheel with audio controls
