Hyundai continues its streak of stylish, affordable and reliable new cars with the funky, front-wheel-drive 2012 Hyundai Veloster. The Veloster, like the Mini Clubman, looks like a coupe on the driver's side but features a third, front hinged rear door on the passenger's side. Judging by the numbers, Hyundai makes good use of the Veloster's small size.
The Hyundai Veloster is lean on the scale, too. An all-new drivetrain debuts on the 2012 Veloster. Four-wheel disc brakes and an Anti-lock Braking System with brake assist come standard on the 2012 Hyundai Veloster. Other safety feature include Electronic Brake-force Distribution, stability control and six airbags, including dual front, front seat-mounted side-impact, and front and rear side curtain.
Hyundai's new optional, agent-assisted Hyundai Blue Link service will offer turn-by-turn navigation, point-of-interest guidance and safety features like Automatic Crash Notification enhanced roadside assistance. Optional is Hyundai's first six-speed dual-clutch auto-shift transmission. Safety equipment includes six airbags, traction control, stability control, tire pressure monitor, and a Blue Link telematics system. Standard equipment includes 17-inch alloy wheels, a 7-inch LCD touch screen, Bluetooth hands-free phone system, and a tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel.
Inspired by a high-performance sport bike, the Hyundai Veloster features distinctive black A-pillars that give the glass a motorcycle helmet visor appearance, an aggressive signature hexagonal front grille, hood scoop detailing, and unique Hyundai-signature LED position lights. The rear gets dual centered chrome exhaust tips and a black lower fascia that complements the assertive front fascia. The 2012 Hyundai Veloster is being offered with Pandora internet radio that can stream internet radio from an iPhone, Android, or Blackberry. A 196-watt AM/FM/Satellite Radio/CD/MP3 audio system with six-speakers and iPod/USB/auxiliary input jack is offered as standard equipment, but Hyundai also offers a 450-watt Dimension Premium Audio system with eight speakers including an eight-inch subwoofer and external amplifier or a Touch screen navigation system that also integrates a rear-view camera.
The new engine features Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (D-CVVT) camshafts and hydraulic engine mounts that provide optimum power, efficiency, and refinement. Hyundai also offers a sport-tuned electric power steering that adjusts instantly to changing driving conditions while improving fuel economy over a conventional steering system.
The Mini Cooper is powered by a 1.6 liter engine that delivers 121 HP. Priced from $18,275, the Scion Tc is powered by a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine with dual VVT-i that generates 180 HP.
